Chicago Divorce Lawyer for Christians: 4 Critical Tips
In Malachi 2:16 we read, “I hate divorce,” says the LORD God of Israel. In our society, where the divorce rate is particularly high, this wording jars us. We have become so used to divorce that the prophet’s condemnation of it seems overly strong. Yet this is God’s Word: He hates divorce.
However, we live in a fallen world and struggle with sin on a daily basis. We now live in a fallen world, and all creation “groans” under the consequences of our sin (Romans 8:22). We experience heartache and pain. Divorce is surely painful!
What’s the best way to approach your divorce as a Jesus follower?
God didn’t Create Divorce, but He does REGULATE Divorce. Although divorce was
not a part of God’s original plan, the concept is biblical, and it’s mentioned in a few
places in the Bible including in the Christmas story (Matthew 1: 19). Further, both
Moses and Jesus Christ discuss a process for divorce (Deuteronomy 24, Matthew 19).
Importance of Children re: family priorities. Parents are to raise godly children who
will be the next generation of those who love the Lord with all their hearts (Proverbs
22:6; Ephesians 6:4). A chaotic and conflictual childhood causes lifelong anxiety and a
lack of executive function in children. Providing the correct structure via court orders for
your children literally will shape the rest of their lives.
Blessed are the Peacemakers. In the sermon on the mount, Jesus said “Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”. Lawyers who promote conflict do so
because they’re either not prepared OR they’re promoting litigation to generate income
(that damages their clients). Domestic violence in general…this kills people and literally
ruins a child for life. We never promote conflict.
Stewardship. Our time on earth and our energy, intelligence, opportunities,
relationships, and resources are all gifts from God that he has entrusted to our care and
management. We are stewards of whatever God gives us. At the end of your life on earth
you will be evaluated and rewarded according to how well you handled what God
entrusted to you. That means everything you do, even simple daily chores, has eternal
implications…including your divorce! I see too many Christians who bury their head in
the sand because she/he might not want the divorce. That’s not God honoring.
In closing, the ultimate goal of the universe is to show the glory of God. How is it possible to handle your divorce to the glory of God? By taking all actions as if you were doing them for Jesus and by carrying on a continual conversation with him while you go through it. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (I Corinthians 10: 31).
